An eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is one of the most spectacular surgical methods to give your face a more youthful appearance. The thin and delicate skin around the eye contour is the first area to show signs of aging. Lines, wrinkles, drooping upper eyelids or bags under lower eyelids steal the youthful glow of your eyes.

The eyelid surgery helps improve the appearance of your eyes and rejuvenates the eye area. The procedure involves an upper or lower eyelid or on both eyelids at the same time.

Surgery

The most common problem with the upper eyelids is excess, loose, stretched and wrinkled skin. With sagging skin, drooping eyelids may cause vision obstruction. In this case, removal of the sagging skin gives both, aesthetic and practical benefits.

For lower eyelids, bags under eyes are the most common indication for a surgical treatment. Bags under lower eyelids are caused by protruding orbital fat and are usually age related. However, this defect may also afflict young people and in this case, it is anatomy related.

The procedure is performed under a local aesthesia or IV sedation with short-acting anaesthetics. When the local anaesthesia is used, the incision is made in the upper eyelid fold to remove sagging skin and excessive fat deposits. In some cases, protruding orbital fat is also reduced.

The surgical scar runs along the eyelid fold and is invisible with open eyes. After a few weeks, red scarring fades away and is hardly noticeable. For lower eyelids, the incision is made underneath the eyelashes. Some skin is removed, orbital fat is modelled or removed while the placement of orbicularis oculi is corrected. Excess skin and orbicularis oculi are gently removed and the wound is stitched up.

In either case, you may go home just a few hours after the surgery. The only dressing which you need to wear is a small band aid applied on the wound and it does not obstruct your vision. You need to apply cold compresses on the wound for a few days.

After the lower eyelid surgery, you need to massage it gently. Statures are removed on the 4th or 5th day after the surgery. The healing process is painless and you do not need to take any special medication. The comprehensive perioperative care treatments offered by our clinic as standard procedures help accelerate healing and enhance quality of the healing process.

Patients usually come back to work 7-10 days after the surgery or 14 days after the lower eyelid surgery. Convalesce is slightly extended when both, upper and lower eyelids are operated on at the same time. The complication rate is very low, slightly higher for lower eyelid procedures.

The eyelid surgery may be combined with other procedures such as a face lift or a forehead lift.
